CREATIVE STATEMENT

My love of Animal and Wildlife illustration began at the New England Aquarium in Boston, where my first job as staff illustrator let me wander behind the scenes with curators and aquarists, sketching extraordinary creatures up close.  That experience led to the non-fiction children’s book All About Egg, and work for the Wildlife Conservation Society.  In an unexpected turn, these animal images opened the door to illustrating for The New York Times Food pages. And today, with my other passionate pursuit of music, as a singer, I’m fascinated by children performing on their musical instruments, adding to my illustration directions.

Q&A

What animal do you most relate to?
Turtles.  My husband loves them. It’s fun drawing them and I have created them out of porcelain as gifts for him—my 3D illustrations.

What animal is the most fun to draw?
All animals.  I enjoy the challenge with good reference images, or sketching them live.

Which do you prefer: cats or dogs?
I love them both as my kids enjoy them as pets.
