CREATIVE STATEMENT

Along with art and drawing, for as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in geography, architecture and travel. So it felt natural to combine all of these interests into map and infographic illustration. Every map project has a beginning, middle and end and to me it really does feel like a journey. I love distilling complicated information into an understandable, informative and attractive maps. The data itself plays a crucial role in the layout and look and feel of the final illustration - it's a real 'form follows function' scenario and is what is really different and interesting about this type of illustration.

Q&A

Where do you find inspiration?
Listening to music and walking out in nature fills my head with many interesting ideas to explore. Exploring other illustrators or artists work sometimes can spark an idea or conceptual direction to build upon.

What is the oddest thing you ever had to draw?
On a recent project I was asked to recreate an image of a large sabre toothed cat biting into the skull of prehistoric human. It was for an infographic on the roots of the psychology of fear and it was done in a sort of X-ray styled visual treatment.

How do you infuse personality into an illustration?
My color choices, textures, light and shading together create a distinctive style and go a long way to setting a mood or an overall aesthetic.
